The execution

I had the job of fronting a team of engineers, to carry out the maintenance and testing of previously installed ATG equipment. This involved both overground and underground checks on the following:

  • Check the functionality of the installed ATG equipment on overground and underground tanks. Check the operation of the ATG Panel.
  • Check calibration of the level measurement gauges and where applicable carry out re-calibration.
  • Check levels in the tank against those indicated on the ATG panel.
  • Identify and recommend necessary long-term repairs and planned maintenance to bring the system to full functionality.

The equipment found installed included Servo gauges, Radar gauges, Hi-Level switches as well as averaging temperature probes and tank side monitors.

Due to there being no maintenance on the site since 2017, an extensive fault list had to be raised, however, what could be repaired on the visit? These faults included:

  • Repair the communication between the field instrumentation and software.
  • Repair to the servo gauges where displacers had been snapped.
  • Repair to averaging temperature sensors utilising spare parts from the customer’s site.
  • Repair to a servo drum, found to have wire located outside grooves and caught behind the drum, this was removed, re-wired and put back into service the same day.
  • All servos required weight calibration and sensor adjustments.

The difficulties we found on site proved to be weather conditions. High winds would halt a lot of work due to safety concerns on top of the tanks.

All works were completed and a close-out meeting with the customer was held to discuss the faults found. We provided information for future quotations to bring the site up to a healthy condition, which included replacing high-level indication panels.
